“They must be held accountable for their actions. I discuss with my friends, and when they ask me what I expect from the legal process, I tell them that I do not wish prison for the girl who beat, but there must be responsibility. At least she should do community service to understand that there are consequences,” said Renata, the mother of the beaten twelve-year-old.
However, she adds that even police officers doubted whether the case would reach court. “Right after the fight, my daughter and I immediately went to the police and filed a report. But the police investigator said it wouldn’t even reach court because they are minors,” the girl’s mother expressed her disappointment.
Journalist, TV and event host Paulius Skučas also spoke about the impunity of teenagers. He witnessed attacks by a gang of rampaging teenagers.
A group of children vandalized the sports palace in Vilnius for several months, and according to P. Skučas, the teenagers arrested by the police soon returned: “The police caught them, took them home, and the kids were back at the Sports Palace after a few hours. Officers said we can’t do anything because they are minors.”
“Imagine, windows breaking, sirens wailing, the building being vandalized, fences overturned, teenagers with masks hiding their faces rampaging. But it reached its peak when in broad daylight masked teenagers, fearless, with masks, sticks, and stones attacked the security guarding the sports palace,” Paulius Skučas recounted.
One teenager was caught by Paulius himself and a nearby Vilnius resident: “When the officers arrived, the teenager knew his rights well and started accusing the men who caught him of violence,” said Paulius Skučas.
“Cases of teenage violence happen every day,” asserted lawyer Julija Manako-Galminė.

She recalled a recent case where she represented a teenager beaten and humiliated in Klaipėda. According to the lawyer, the court turned into a circus because the accused abuser swore, lied that he lost his voice, and could not speak. “Imagine, in the end, the court gave the accused a warning,” the lawyer spoke about the feeling of injustice. She believes that in the Marijampolė violence case, the twelve-year-old will not face stricter responsibility either.
The lawyer of the twelve-year-old accused of violence in Marijampolė stated that she is categorically against increasing punishments and lowering the age of responsibility for children.
“Do you really want to punish children? The girl I represent has already been punished. She receives threats, insults, she cannot leave the house, she is very distressed,” said the well-known lawyer Aušra Ručienė.
Hearing the thoughts of the lawyer of the twelve-year-old accused of violence, singer Anžela Adamovič did not hide her emotions.
“I was in the place of that beaten girl. When I was 15, I was surrounded by a group of girls. I liked one boy, and he liked another girl. That girl decided to beat me up. There were boys around, but they did nothing, they did not defend me. I only remember that terrible feeling of fear and the blood flowing,” Anžela recounted with tears.
