Vilnius invites you to move together: European Mobility Week events – for city residents of all ages

Events in the capital will be adapted to various population groups – from students to seniors, encouraging reflection on different mobility needs and drawing attention to convenient travel for everyone. Throughout the week, city residents and visitors to the Capital will be able to join free educational walks, a bicycle ride, a family festival, orienteering competitions, and unexpected experiences on public transport.

“Mobility for all starts with everyday decisions and the city’s ability to facilitate them. It is important for a child to safely reach school, for a senior to transfer clearly and comfortably to public transport, for a family to smoothly plan a trip, and for a working person to reliably get to work.

Therefore, in Vilnius, we strengthen not just one mode of transport but create an entire system: public transport, pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure, convenient travel planning. European Mobility Week is an invitation to try another way of traveling and feel that the city can be convenient for everyone,” says JUDU director Loreta Levulytė-Staškevičienė.

The climax of Sustainable Mobility Week – Car-Free Day
September 22 marks the International Car-Free Day – one of the main highlights of European Mobility Week.

On this day, European cities and their residents are invited to give up car travel at least temporarily and choose other modes of travel – public transport, cycling, walking, or sharing services. The initiative reminds us that even small daily choices can contribute to a cleaner environment, less traffic congestion, safer and more convenient movement in the city. The goal of this day is to inspire residents to make even small changes.

For example, to make at least one trip per day sustainably – by public transport, on foot, or by bicycle. After all, choosing alternative travel methods not only directly reduces air pollution but also opens the opportunity to integrate physical activity into the daily rhythm without additional time costs.
To make sustainable travel choices even more attractive for Vilnius residents, the city is consistently investing in renewing the public transport fleet and the network of bicycle and pedestrian paths.

The network of bicycle paths in Vilnius already reaches 182 km. The network of rapid A lanes has also been expanded, allowing public transport to move faster than car traffic during peak hours, and smart adaptive traffic light systems are used to manage traffic flows.
In 2024–2025, 91 new low-floor trolleybuses have hit the streets. This year, the city will receive as many as 81 new 18-meter-long trolleybuses, and the JUDU app was recently introduced, where you can not only pay for public transport and parking services but also conveniently plan trips by public transport or bicycles.
