A new large-scale study involving more than 180,000 adults revealed that the risk of a first ischemic stroke (blockage of blood vessels in the brain) doubles during the first year after a cancer diagnosis, reports “Everyday Health”.

The risk was highest among adults diagnosed with lung cancer (four times higher) or pancreatic cancer (six times higher) during those first years.

“Our study shows that the risk of a first ischemic stroke after a cancer diagnosis is increased, but this increase is not uniform across all types of cancer. These results underline the need to pay more attention to vascular risk in the early period after diagnosis, especially in higher-risk cancer groups,” says the lead author of the study Carmit Libruder, PhD, epidemiologist and public health researcher.
