Preparing for the new expedition “Kuršis,” Aurimas Mockus: “The sea is calling again”

In Angaras, Klaipėda district, Aurimas Mockus’s boat is being prepared for a new odyssey. “It’s good on this shore too, but I probably felt what sailors say, how the sea calls,” the traveler admitted.

Next year, the Klaipėda native, after a couple of years since his last trip, plans to embark on a journey through the Coral Sea and the Indian Ocean.

“Those who saw ‘Kuršis’ and see it only now probably think it’s the same boat, as if nothing had happened,” said A. Mockus. However, after repairs, many innovations were actually implemented on ‘Kuršis.’ Work on the boat began as soon as he returned to Lithuania – at the end of last summer.

The traveler admitted that not everything went as planned while preparing the boat. “But I guess it had to be that way, because as soon as you rush – something wrong always ‘pops up’,” said A. Mockus.

We improved the hold, the sealing. We paid special attention to this because it was the thing that stopped the trip – sinking on the port side. This time, I hope, it won't happen. We also improved the electronics, installed more powerful batteries, and an additional generator. These things, learned mistakes – will help prepare even better," said the traveler.

The upcoming trip will be dedicated to children supported by the Rimantas Kaukėnas Support Fund.

It is planned that in November the boat will be shipped by container from the port of Klaipėda and will reach New Caledonia, an archipelago in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, in February.

“Then in mid-February I could start in the Coral Sea, it will take 2–3 weeks to cross it. If all goes well – I will pull out the boat, if needed – I will improve something. Then I will transport the boat to southern Australia, Perth, and then to the Indian Ocean. I plan for half a year, but maybe it will be faster,” said A. Mockus.

During one and a half years spent on shore, he assembled a team and wrote a memoir book about the previous trip.

This time, the shore team will be led by Osvaldas Kudzevičius, captain of the yacht “Lietuva.”
