This airport, which usually serves about 12 million passengers a year, was also closed for a week in August, in the middle of the summer season, for the same reason.
In Italy, there are increasing calls to close Catania airport and expand other Sicilian hubs due to the proximity of the volcano, as Etna is only about 40 kilometers away.
The eruption in August attracted crowds of visitors to Etna, where impressive lava flows could be observed up close.
Etna, at 3,324 meters high, is the highest active volcano in Europe and erupts quite frequently.
