The brightest stars of the world discus throw returned to Vilnius after a twenty-year break. In 2005–2006, thousands of crowds flocked to Vingis Park to watch Virgilijus Alekna’s battles with his main competitor, Estonian Gerd Kanter.
Today, the competition also features Martynas Alekna and this year’s European Athletics Championships discus throw finalists from the Netherlands, Shaquille Emanuelson and Ruben Rolvinikas.

Last year, Mykolas Alekna, who celebrated victory in Vingis Park, fell just over a meter short of the stadium record (70.01 meters), which belongs to his father V. Alekna. This year, the record is under serious threat, as Mykolas Alekna’s best season result is 72.65 m, K. Čeh’s – 72.61 m, R. Stone’s – 70.66 m.
Today, the competition was symbolically opened with throws by two Lithuanian discus throw legends – the first Olympic champion of independent Lithuania, Romas Ubartas, and two-time Olympic, world, and European champion V. Alekna.
