The attention of the border guards was drawn to the travel document presented by a 21-year-old woman who had already purchased a ticket.

Routine document checks are not conducted on Schengen internal routes, but border guards have the right to selectively check any passenger or vehicle based on risk assessments.

The foreigner wishing to sail to Germany presented a Belgian identity card to the VSAT officers.

After verification, the border guards found it to be a complete forgery.

The young woman had no other documents, but during communication with VSAT officers, she admitted to being a Somali citizen.

A more detailed check revealed more circumstances of this story.

“It turned out that the Somali woman was detained in Poland back in July and handed over to Lithuanian border guards. Her journey to Western Europe, which began with a flight to Belarus and illegal crossing of the Latvian state border, was interrupted. The Somali citizen was brought to the Reception and Integration Agency (PIIA) Pabradė reception center, but she left there in September,” reported Aistė Žalnieraitienė, a representative of the VSAT Coastal Border Guard Unit.

The foreigner was detained and placed in the Klaipėda County Police Headquarters detention facility.

VSAT has initiated a pre-trial investigation for forgery of a document or possession of a forged document.

This criminal offense is punishable by a fine, restriction of liberty, arrest, or imprisonment for up to four years.

The investigation is led by a prosecutor from the Klaipėda District Prosecutor’s Office of the Klaipėda Regional Prosecutor’s Office.

It is stated that he will apply to the court for the case to be concluded by a penal order.

The day after the interrogation, the Somali woman was handed over to the VSAT Foreigners Registration Center in Pabradė.
