An unusual artwork dedicated to the memory of this year’s deceased artist Wim T. Schippers was exhibited for two months at the Boijmans and van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam.

According to the artist’s instructions, peanut butter was spread on the hexagonal 25 square meter floor “as evenly as possible, without any lumps.”
“Forty-eight visitors fatally stepped on the floor,” the museum said in a statement summarizing the exhibition. “Five phones were fished out.”
“There was one licking incident,” the statement added, with a press representative telling AFP that a small child was considered the culprit.
The museum also received 80 complaints in writing or by phone.
After the exhibition ended, a big question arises: what to do with hundreds of kilograms of used peanut butter?

“We investigated whether the peanut butter could be reused, for example, in zoos, animal shelters, or sustainable initiatives,” museum representative Rene Timmermans told AFP. “However, after being part of the memorial for eight weeks, we could no longer guarantee its quality, hygiene, or food safety.”
Therefore, the peanut butter will go to the compost heap, said R. Timmermans.
Residents of the Netherlands are big fans of peanut butter and often combine it with chocolate sprinkles “Hagelslag” for a high-calorie breakfast.
The museum noted that more than 400 peanut butter sandwiches were served in its café.

“The combination with ‘Hagelslag’ was the most popular,” the statement said.
