Meeting with Kaja Kallas, the president expressed expectations regarding EU funding for defense and support for Ukraine

The Presidency announced on Monday that during discussions on the upcoming negotiations for the 2028–2024 multiannual EU budget, G. Nausėda emphasized the need to ensure sufficient funding for security and defense, military mobility, critical infrastructure resilience, competitiveness, and support for Ukraine.

According to the head of state, special attention must be paid to the EU’s Eastern border regions and the challenges posed by hybrid threats.

Speaking about Ukraine, the president noted that European support must be strengthened, especially in air defense, counter-drone measures, and energy resilience. The allocation of the remaining European Peace Facility funds to Ukraine and a greater contribution from member states to Ukraine’s defense were also discussed, the statement said.

G. Nausėda also called to maintain maximum pressure on Russia and Belarus, ensure the continuity of existing sanctions, adopt the 22nd sanctions package, and accelerate the adoption of new measures targeting Russia’s energy, financial, military, and industrial sectors.

The meeting also covered EU enlargement. The president stressed the need to move faster forward in the accession process of Ukraine and Moldova and to continue progress in the Western Balkan countries.

Lithuania will hold the Presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of next year. According to G. Nausėda, the main focus during this period will be on European security and defense, EU enlargement, competitiveness, internal security, and social resilience.
