Berlin – a new alarming incident

Officials are investigating whether this incident is sabotage or a technical malfunction.

The fire at the electrical substation occurred at a time when authorities are searching for a suspected radical climate activist accused of carrying out a series of attacks on substations across Germany last week, aimed at cutting off supply from coal-fired power plants.

Early Monday, emergency services in Berlin received a report of a fire in the Moabit district.

“A construction site and part of the substation were on fire; they were damaged by the flames,” police said, adding that electricity supply was not disrupted.

With the help of the grid operator, police are investigating whether the fire was caused by arson or a technical fault.

The attacks on substations last week took place in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in the west and the state of Brandenburg in the east. They did not cause major power supply disruptions, but some power plant equipment was temporarily shut down as a result.

Police are looking for a 48-year-old individual who sent letters claiming responsibility for these actions and stating that it was a protest against the fossil fuel industry.

In recent months, there have been several attacks on power grids in Germany, with some cases claimed by far-left militants.
