„Speaking about the number of council members, the Social Democrats won 370 mandates across Lithuania in 2023, we won 240. I have no doubt that the difference will decrease. (…) We are stronger in big cities, they are stronger in smaller districts. Of course, our goal is to keep all the mayors who have won and to win one or two additional seats,“ he emphasized.
The Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats have nominated 34 candidates for mayoral posts, and plan to confirm the rest by October 30.
Just last week, the party’s candidate for mayor of Kaunas city became public figure and businessman Šarūnas Jasiukevičius.
L. Kasčiūnas did not reveal on Saturday whether Vilnius city mayor Valdas Benkunskas will seek re-election, but said he would support his decision to run.

Among other things, he hoped that party member, parliamentarian Andrius Petrošius would not delay the decision to run for mayor of Klaipėda city and would soon make a decision.
Earlier it was reported that in Šiauliai the post will be sought by city council member and party branch chairman Martynas Šiurkus, in Panevėžys – former deputy minister of education, science and sports, current council member Ignas Gaižiūnas.
Direct elections for mayors and municipal councils will take place in spring 2027. The Speaker of the Seimas proposes to hold them on March 7, but the parliament still has to approve this.
