The head of state noted that EU enlargement will be one of the most important priorities of Lithuania’s presidency of the EU Council in 2027. Lithuania will seek to use the presidency half-year for concrete progress in Moldova’s accession process, while strengthening EU-Moldova relations.

The conversation also covered the threats posed by Russia and the security situation in the region. The president emphasized that Russia’s attempts to influence Moldova must be taken seriously. Lithuania will continue to provide Moldova with practical support to strengthen its resilience and security – in 2022–2025 Lithuania’s bilateral development cooperation support to Moldova amounted to 7.56 million euros, and in 2026–2028 Lithuania’s military support to Moldova will total 6 million euros. Lithuanian institutions will also implement a 120 million euro air defense support package for Moldova.
