It is best to break the garlic bulb into cloves just before planting. This way, the base of the cloves dries out less and they remain more viable.
Why soak garlic cloves?
Before planting, cloves can be disinfected – this can help reduce the amount of some fungal disease pathogens on the planting material.
Several solutions are most commonly used at home.
Copper sulfate solution
One method is to use a copper sulfate solution. About 1 tablespoon of copper sulfate is added to 10 liters of water.
Cloves are soaked for about 20–30 minutes, then removed.

Potassium permanganate solution
Another traditional method is a potassium permanganate (manganese) solution. There should be enough water so that the resulting solution is light pink in color.

Garlic cloves are also soaked in it for about 20–30 minutes.
Important not to overdo it
Disinfection can be beneficial, but it does not guarantee a bountiful harvest. For garlic growth, it is equally important to choose healthy planting material, a suitable location, well-prepared soil, and the right planting time.
You should also not use several different disinfectant solutions at the same time. Choose one method and follow the recommended concentration and soaking duration.
Well-prepared, healthy cloves are one of the important steps to ensure that next summer the garlic grows large and healthy bulbs.
