The stamp created by artist Natalija Vaišnorienė will be issued on September 4th, with a print run of 15,000 copies, and its face value is 2.35 Eur. The stamp will be postmarked with the first day of issue cancellation at the Plungė post office, located at S. Dariaus and S. Girėno St. 2, on the day of release.
Known as the Versailles of Samogitia, the Plungė manor became an important cultural center at the end of the 19th century during the rule of the Oginski dukes. At the initiative of Mykolas Oginskis, the current manor palace was built in the northern part of the park, designed by the German architect Karl Lorenz.
The central palace building was designed in the then fashionable neo-Renaissance style, and the manor ensemble created around it became an integral part of Plungė’s cultural life. The manor also housed a music school founded by M. Oginskis, where Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, who later became one of Lithuania’s most prominent cultural figures, studied.
“Postage stamps allow us to briefly pause a moment in history and preserve it for the future. The history of the Plungė manor is especially suitable for this. It is not only an impressive cultural heritage site but also a place associated with people and events that have left a significant mark on Lithuanian culture. By continuing the series of stamps dedicated to manors, we want to remind how many stories lie hidden in our country’s heritage,” says Aušrutė Varnienė, project manager of philately at Lithuanian Post.

Today, the former palace of Duke M. Oginskis houses the Samogitian Art Museum, and the manor ensemble and park are among the most important historical and cultural symbols of Plungė.
The new stamp dedicated to the Plungė manor palace complements the ongoing series of postage stamps “Lithuanian Heritage. Manors,” which is dedicated to presenting and commemorating various manors across the country. Last year, a stamp in this series was issued for the Čiobiškis manor located in the Širvintos district.
