In a tennis spectacle lasting just 4 hours and 53 minutes, Alexander Zverev defeated Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego (ATP-89) with a score of 6:4, 3:6, 6:7(7), 7:5, 6:3, avoiding undoubtedly the biggest upset of this year’s US Open tournament.
The clash on the central court in New York ended after midnight – around 1:55 a.m. local time.
In the fourth set, Sascha was two points away from elimination when he was trailing 4:5 and 30:30, but by winning his serves, the Roland Garros champion started a surge that allowed him to turn the match in his favor.
“I’m just happy that I won. There were many ups and downs. Almost five hours for a first-round match. I want to congratulate my opponent, he played great. Today Lorenzo would probably have beaten most opponents, so I’m glad I managed to stay in,” Zverev said.

By the way, for the 29-year-old tennis player, this is the second longest Grand Slam match of his career. The longest remains the 5 hours and 27 minutes marathon against Carlos Alcaraz at this year’s Australian Open.
In the second round, A. Zverev will face Frenchman Quentin Halys (ATP-52), whom he has already beaten this year in Miami and Paris.
