The most common cause is sweat. During the night, sweat and natural skin oils penetrate through the pillowcase into the pillow itself. Over time, this leaves yellow or brown stains. However, sweat is not the only culprit. Other common causes of stains are saliva, skin and hair care products, makeup, moisture, and spilled drinks or food.

Author of the book “Organization Hacks” and founder of the blog “Making Lemonade” Carrie Higgins says: “I won’t go into details, but suffice it to say that pillows are real dirt traps, accumulated over six or eight hours you spend on them every single night. Multiply that by the number of nights… Yes, body oils, hair product residues, sweat, saliva, dust mites, dead skin – clean that pillow!”
