This shows that they are increasingly expected not only to have programming knowledge but also the ability to analyze data, automate processes, and ensure smooth data exchange between systems.

The study analyzed more than 65 thousand job postings published in Lithuania from January 2025 to May 2026. Almost a quarter of them – 15.7 thousand – mentioned at least one of the 21 programming languages analyzed. The most common were SQL, mentioned in 49% of cases, and Python – 39%. Next were JavaScript (16%), TypeScript and Java (about 15% each).

“Today, a technology specialist needs more than just the ability to write code; they must also be able to understand data, automate processes, and choose the most suitable tool to solve a specific problem. Employers are looking not for people who know more programming languages, but for specialists who can practically apply this knowledge and turn data into real business value,” says Andrius Kūkšta, head of the technical team at Oxylabs.
Working with data becomes a universal skill in the technology market
The importance of data is most clearly revealed by the combination of SQL and Python. Both languages together were mentioned in 19% of the analyzed job postings – more often than any other pair of programming languages. SQL is usually used to access, select, and manage data, while Python is used for data analysis, process automation, system integration, and creating artificial intelligence solutions.
This combination is needed not only by data scientists. SQL is mentioned in 64% of job postings for backend developers and 57% for full-stack developers. Among software engineers, SQL is mentioned in 47% of postings, and among frontend developers – in a third.
The need is even clearer in professions directly related to data. SQL is mentioned in 85% of job postings for data engineers and architects and 71% for data and business analytics specialists. Python is correspondingly indicated in 78% and 56% of these offers. In data science and artificial intelligence positions, Python’s share reaches as high as 87%.
“Data literacy is becoming a universal skill in the technology market. More and more products, processes, and business decisions rely on data, so the ability to understand and apply it is needed not only by analysts or data scientists. Today, technology specialists from very different fields encounter data, so it is increasingly important not only to access it but also to understand what it says and how it can help make better decisions,” says Martynas Striūkas, head of talent acquisition and recruitment at Oxylabs.
Automating processes is a skill required not only of programmers
The study results also show that programming skill requirements depend on the specific profession. In the field of website development, TypeScript and JavaScript dominate, but for infrastructure, cybersecurity, or network specialists, Python and the command language Bash become important.
Python is mentioned in 67% of job postings for cloud, DevOps, and SRE specialists. The same share is found in network engineering positions, while in cybersecurity postings it reaches 56%. Systems engineers and IT operations specialists most often require Bash – it is mentioned in 70% of postings, and Python in 56%.

This allows us to talk about expanding automation competence. Employees in these fields do not necessarily create user-facing programs daily, but they use code to manage infrastructure, monitor systems, automate repetitive tasks, investigate security incidents, and integrate different systems.
There is no single universal language
Although SQL and Python stand out in the overall job posting statistics, the study shows that there is no single programming language in the technology market that automatically opens the way to all professions. Employer requirements are primarily determined by the nature of the specific position and the tasks the specialist will perform. Therefore, it is more important not to accumulate the longest list of programming languages but to have a solid foundation in the chosen field and know how to properly apply different tools.
On average, about two programming languages are specified in one job posting. This number hardly depends on the work experience – a similar number of programming languages is mentioned in offers for both beginners and experienced specialists. This shows that it is important not only to know several programming languages but also to be able to combine them when solving specific tasks.
“The technology market changes quickly, so trying to learn as many different languages as possible is not necessarily the best strategy. More value is provided by a solid foundation in the chosen field and the ability to continuously update your knowledge as the nature of the work changes. For specialists starting their careers, it is important not to chase every new technology but to learn to solve problems, understand data, and not be afraid to automate everyday tasks,” advises the head of the technical team at Oxylabs.
The highest demand is concentrated in the capital
Almost half (49%) of all analyzed job postings mentioning at least one programming language were aimed at software engineering specialists. Data and business analytics positions accounted for 9%, and data science as well as artificial intelligence and data engineering positions – about 7% each.
The demand for technology specialists in Lithuania remains geographically concentrated. 66% of the analyzed job offers were in Vilnius, 15% in Kaunas. By sectors, 59% of job offers were posted by companies in the technology, data, and telecommunications sectors, and 18% by companies in finance, insurance, and real estate.
“The high concentration of technology jobs in Vilnius shows that the capital still hosts the majority of employers and career opportunities in this field, but at the same time, it reveals the untapped potential of other cities. Remote and hybrid work models can help companies reach a wider pool of specialists and provide candidates with more opportunities regardless of their place of residence,” says the head of talent acquisition and recruitment at Oxylabs.
