The recognition of this fact will allow AB “Energijos skirstymo operatorius” (ESO) to pay compensations to consumers affected by power outages caused by the storm. VERT states that the outage, in which electricity transmission was interrupted due to natural phenomena, covered the entire mainland territory of Lithuania.

The duration and location of the outage are important in assessing the maximum electricity supply restoration deadlines and compensation applied to consumers.
“This storm was of exceptional scale, its effects on electricity supply were felt throughout Lithuania. Therefore, the decision to recognize this event as an outage is primarily important for consumers – it creates conditions for those who were without electricity for more than 72 hours due to the storm to receive compensation. At the same time, the initiated investigation will assess ESO’s preparedness and actions during the storm and determine what can be done to minimize the impact of such extreme natural phenomena on consumers in the future,” says VERT chairman Renatas Pocius.
VERT reminds that currently, the electricity supply restoration and compensation regime applied to consumers who lost electricity during the outage period is 72 hours. If the electricity supply restoration works take longer than 72 hours, consumers have the right to apply to the operator for compensation.

It was also decided at the meeting to start an investigation into the electricity supply outage caused by the storm on August 22: ESO’s preparedness, actions during the event and in eliminating the storm’s consequences, as well as the organization of electricity supply restoration and communication with consumers, will be evaluated.
The investigation will aim not only to determine the causes of the event and assess ESO’s actions but also to foresee what measures could reduce the impact of similar extreme natural phenomena on electricity consumers in the future.
