The new institution would replace the existing Čekoniškės village willow and household parlor, whose current premises no longer meet the growing needs of museum, educational, and cultural activities.

“The Čekoniškės parlor has been an important place for many years where the tradition of willow weaving was preserved and presented. However, today we need more space and more opportunities – for education, exhibitions, and the preservation of the willow collection itself. The ‘Willow House’ would allow us to expand the activities carried out so far and create a modern attraction center that could attract even more visitors from Lithuania and abroad,” notes Robertas Duchnevičius, mayor of Vilnius district municipality.
At the ‘Willow House’ there will be exhibitions, educational programs, conferences, seminars, and other cultural events. The willow collection will be preserved here, scientific research will be conducted, and the accumulated material will be presented to the public. The exhibition plans to use modern solutions – visitors will be able to watch video clips, try interactive educational games, and hear stories from willow weavers.
“The tradition of willow weaving is part of the identity of the Vilnius region, which we must not only preserve but also pass on to future generations in a living, understandable, and attractive way. Therefore, we want to create a place where the tradition is not only presented – it is studied, taught, shared, and most importantly – it is alive and unites the community,” says Edita Tamošiūnaitė, deputy mayor of Vilnius district municipality.

The new institution is planned to be established in the renovated Mozūriškės manor estate – a cultural heritage site surrounded by park territory. This location was chosen deliberately – the largest community of willow weavers has long lived in the Mozūriškės area. The cultural and historical value of the manor and the unique environment create favorable conditions to combine museum, educational, cultural, and recreational activities here.
The draft decision on establishing the public institution is planned to be considered by the Education, Culture, Sports, and Youth Affairs Committee of the Vilnius district municipality council, and the final decision is expected to be made at the next council meeting.
