To browse and purchase the latest LNDM books and learn from publishing specialists how they are created, LNDM Deputy General Director for Research and Publishing Dr. Algė Andriulytė invites you on the first weekend of September: “We are glad that every year at the ‘Book Square’ we can present the museum’s publishing news, as well as offer already beloved and previously highly appreciated publications. This year, I suggest diving into the unexpected Arctic experiences for many and discovering the connections of Baltic countries’ art with the northernmost part of the Earth.
Also, many will find it interesting to return to 19th-century Vilnius and explore it through the photographs of Wilhelm Zacharczyk or to be transported to the world full of social tension created by the Kharkiv School of Photography in Ukraine. All these publications complement the exhibitions held at the museum and invite you to revisit them, but in a different form – as books – richly supplemented with new research and commentary.”
The “Book Square” event program will begin with a look at 19th-century Vilnius
On Friday, September 4, at 11 a.m., the “Book Square” stage will present the book by Dr. Margarita Matulytė and Dr. Dainius Junevičius “Wilhelm Zacharczyk’s ‘Vilnius Album'”. The publication invites a look at the capital as it was seen in the mid-19th century by one of the city’s first photographers, Wilhelm Józef Zacharczyk (1841–1869). The presentation will be attended by one of the editors of the publication, Dr. Dainius Junevičius, and the director of the Vilnius Picture Gallery, Dr. Aistė Bimbirytė.
The photographer, who arrived in Vilnius from Kremenets via Warsaw, managed to get to know, love, and capture the city in one of the earliest photographic stories dedicated to him within just a year.
At the exhibition “Bright City, Dark Times” at the LNDM Vilnius Picture Gallery, his photographs already attracted attentive visitors’ glances, and now everyone can have some of the earliest photographic images of Vilnius in their own library. The book publishes all 52 album photographs, reconstructs the author’s biography, presents his creative environment, and the culture of 19th-century photographic albums.
The photographs are complemented by commentary, a list of works, and a map marking the recorded locations, helping to recognize preserved, discover vanished or changed Vilnius spaces and better understand the dramatic period of the city’s history.
Publications fresh from the press will direct readers’ attention to the landscapes of the North and Lithuania
The latest LNDM publication “Shadows Leave Traces. Northern Memory and Imagination” will begin its journey from the press to readers at the “Book Square”. The book invites a look back to the North and explores the Baltic region’s connections with the Arctic. Texts by researchers from various fields reveal how this region shaped our culture, imagination, and collective memory.
The publication brings together artworks and visual archives created from the early 20th century to the present from Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia alongside works by Sami, Finnish, and Norwegian authors, inviting a closer approach to the embodied experience of the North, mostly the Arctic, landscape.
The recently released publication “Ukrainian Dreamers: The Kharkiv School of Photography” presents the Kharkiv School of Photography – a unique community of artists uniting four generations of Ukrainian creators from the 1970s to the present. During decades of Soviet censorship, turbulent times of Ukraine’s independence struggle and revolutions, and later during the war, Kharkiv photographers consistently expanded the boundaries of photography, turning it into a powerful means of aesthetic expression and social critique.

The English-language publication consists of texts by six researchers examining Kharkiv photography and its contexts from various aspects, and a richly illustrated chronology of the movement.
Another publishing novelty this year is Dr. Margarita Matulytė’s book “Landscape Semiosis in Lithuanian Photography” – the first study of such scope on landscape representation in Lithuanian photography.
Using linguistics, geography, sociology, and art theory, the author reveals the development of landscape photography, its connection with societal values and the concept of nature, and shows how photographers not only capture but also interpret the environment, revealing different layers of time.
The latest LNDM publications also open up the history of the museum itself. The English-language catalog “Hommage to Donors: The Origins of the Vilnius Picture Gallery” tells about the origins of the Vilnius Picture Gallery, early 20th-century art patronage, and donors whose gifts became the foundation of today’s museum collections.
Books already beloved by readers and appreciated by professionals
Every year, LNDM publishes a dozen or so publications of high artistic value, content, and printing quality – art albums, exhibition catalogs, collections of scientific articles, and studies. In 2025 alone, the museum presented twelve new publications to readers, some of which have already received special recognition. The educational book “Swallows,” telling about artists’ childhood games, won the category of children’s books in the 2025 Most Beautiful Lithuanian Book competition this February.
The memoirs “On the Way to America” by Aleksandra Kasuba, published at the end of last year, continue the acquaintance with the artist, discovered and loved by many readers through the book “Ticking Child.” The editor of both publications, LNDM Senior Researcher-Curator of the Department of Fine Arts Dr. Elona Lubyte, was awarded the Art Criticism Award for initiating the translation and publishing project of the second memoir book.
LNDM publications will be available for purchase at the “Book Square” from September 4–6: Friday – 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday – 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Sunday – 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Those who do not manage to choose the desired books can find them in the online store and at the museum cash desks. Visitors at the LNDM stand will find not only publishing news and various souvenirs but also the “Friend Card.”
Those who have it can visit nine LNDM branches in Vilnius, Klaipėda, Palanga, and Juodkrantė for free, are invited to exclusive experiences, and enjoy discounts on tours, tickets for accompanying persons, and publications. The discount on publications applies in the LNDM online store and museum publications and souvenir shops.
