The news portal “Kas vyksta Kaune” contacted the Kaunas municipality on August 19 and August 24 regarding the traffic renewal on Didžioji Street but received no response.
The portal 15min received a response from Aloyzas Pakalniškis, head of the City Maintenance Department of the Kaunas City Municipality Administration:
“The contractors are making every effort to have the asphalt laid on the renovated Didžioji Street by September.”
Will traffic be restored by September?
However, it seems that traffic on this street and Vaišvydava Avenue will be restored already on August 31. The company “Kauno autobusai” announced this, informing that bus traffic will also change due to the renewed traffic on these streets.
“After the summer repair works, the usual bus routes towards Vaišvydava are returning! From August 31, traffic on Vaišvydava Avenue and Didžioji Street will be restored, so bus traffic will also change,” shared “Kauno autobusai” on the social network “Facebook” on Tuesday.
According to them, from August 31, route 46 will return to its previous route and will again run through Vaišvydava Avenue, Rūko, Didžioji, Piliuonos, and Girionių streets.
The route of bus 68 does not change – buses will continue to run on the current route through Kariūnų Ave., Kurtinių, Balčkalnio, Marijampolės Ave., Rokelių, Garšvės, and Piliuonos streets.
“Since traffic on Vaišvydava Avenue and Didžioji Street is being restored, the temporary route 0 will no longer operate from August 31.
When planning trips from August 31, do not forget to check the updated routes and schedules,” they announced.
Reconstruction and repairs in Vaišvydava
We remind you that due to the reconstruction of Didžioji and Piliuonos streets in Vaišvydava, the section of Didžioji Street between Rūko and V. Borisevičius streets has been completely closed since April.
However, the Kaunas municipality assured in July that the asphalt on the renovated Didžioji St. should be laid by September.
The reconstruction works of Didžioji and Piliuonos streets began on April 7. Currently, the section of Didžioji Street between Rūko and V. Borisevičius streets is completely closed, so drivers are urged to choose the designated detours.
It was planned that the first phase of the works, during which traffic is most restricted, would continue until September.
The entire reconstruction, valued at nearly 4.4 million euros including VAT, according to updated deadlines, should be completed by February 2028. The works are carried out by the company “Autokausta”.
