LSU coach Kim Mulkey explained in an official statement that 20-year-old K. Koval is leaving the team for “personal reasons,” and also added that “the team respects her privacy regarding this decision.”

“It was a difficult decision for her. I know this because she loves LSU. Kate is a wonderful person. She did what she felt was right, and we support her and wish her the best,” said the coach.
Born in Kyiv, K. Koval represented the LSU team for one season, having previously played for the University of Notre Dame team.
She averaged 8.3 points and 6.3 rebounds and hoped to have an even bigger role in the upcoming season.

However, the Ukrainian decided to leave the team when LSU signed a contract with Russian Anna Minayeva.
It is reported that the LSU team coach still hoped to persuade K. Koval to stay on the team and become a kind of ambassador for her country in the league. K. Mulkey said she did not want to change K. Koval’s opinion about Russia but added that she could not make the decision not to recruit a player from Russia just because there is a “conflict” between Russia and Ukraine.
