The meeting to be held on September 13–14 aims to “strengthen the EU’s common strategic approach to the Arctic region, as its geopolitical significance continues to grow rapidly,” according to a statement from the office of Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo.

It is planned that EU leaders will participate in the meeting, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, as well as EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and the President of the European Council Antonio Costa.

“The Arctic region is an increasingly important part of Europe’s security environment,” Orpo said in the statement.

The strategic importance of the Arctic has increased as melting sea ice has eased access to important natural resources and opened new shipping routes.
