At the beginning of the first lap, Max Verstappen lost control of his car, crashing into the barriers and damaging the car. A red flag was then shown, and the race was stopped for almost half an hour.
Upon the race restart, Lando Norris gave up the lead to Kimi Antonelli. However, later in the race, the Briton reclaimed what was his. Behind them was Oscar Piastri, but a long pit stop cost the Australian dearly.
Third place was taken by George Russell, who took advantage of the Australian and McLaren’s mistake in the pits. Still, the Briton had to fend off Ferrari drivers in the final laps. This was helped by a virtual safety car after a collision between Williams cars.
Fourth place went to Lewis Hamilton, who just missed the podium, fifth was another Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc, and sixth was O. Piastri.
Liam Lawson, who had a clean race with the Red Bull car, finished seventh. Nico Hulkenberg finished in eighth position.
Fernando Alonso scored the first points of the season, finishing ninth. The top ten was completed by Alpine driver Pierre Gasly.
