In northeast England, near Middlesbrough, on the main A66 road, seven people died early Saturday in an accident, including two police officers on duty, the police reported.

Officers are investigating the exact circumstances of the incident but said the collision occurred after a suspicious car was being chased, which eventually started driving in the wrong lane and crashed into a police car driving in its lane.
Earlier, on Sunday, another tragic accident occurred in Ireland, claiming the lives of five teenagers.
Their car was driving westbound on the M9 motorway from Dublin in the wrong direction and collided head-on with another vehicle. Four people in the second car, including a child, were seriously injured in the incident.
These accidents happened as officers increasingly speak out about the trend on social media of driving in the wrong lane.
After Sunday’s tragic accident, Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin said it was another recent incident of vehicles driving in the wrong lane on motorways.

“There can be no tolerance for this irresponsible behavior we have been seeing on our roads recently. It must stop,” Martin said.
Police chief Justin Kelly said a similar collision had occurred earlier on the M50 motorway in Dublin and warned that “what makes this irresponsible behavior even more outrageous is that in some cases it is done for social media.”
The M50 accident a week earlier involved a stolen car driven by teenagers going the wrong way and seriously injuring several people.
In another incident in early August, a video filmed from inside a stolen car being chased by police also appeared on social media.
