What Russia demands
Relations between Russia and Armenia have worsened due to Yerevan’s plans to join the European Union. Since May, Moscow has consistently banned the supply of various Armenian products – including alcohol, vegetables, fruits, fish, milk, and flowers. The first Russian bans on importing and transit of Armenian goods appeared before the parliamentary elections held on June 7, and after the victory of N. Pashinyan’s party, their number increased sharply.
In Armenia, these restrictions are considered unjustified, and there are calls to resolve the issue based on existing agreements. Meanwhile, the Russian authorities claimed that the measures were taken to ensure consumer safety.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also demanded that Yerevan hold a referendum on the choice between the EU and the Eurasian Economic Union, as well as resume financial commitments to the Collective Security Treaty Organization, whose membership Armenia froze in 2024.
Armenia turned towards the EU
In response to Moscow’s actions, Yerevan began redirecting its product supplies to other markets, including Europe. At the same time, the EU allocated Armenia 52 million euros in urgent aid to “strengthen economic resilience” and reorient exports.
Brussels also announced the removal of tariffs on nearly 80% of Armenian goods. Finally, in the first half of 2026, Armenia increased exports to EU countries by 80% – up to 516 million USD, compared to 287 million USD the previous year.
