Don't make this mistake when harvesting plums – the tree will weaken, and the fruits will grow small

To ensure the future crop receives as much sun as possible and the fruits are juicy and sweet, first you should remove:

shoots growing straight up and at a sharp angle – they consume the tree’s nutrients but bear almost no fruit;

branches directed inside the crown, which create dense shade;

crossing and rubbing shoots and branches, as this damages the bark.

After such thinning, the fruits inside the crown will get more light.

Plums bear fruit most abundantly on branches that are four to five years old, and their fertility naturally decreases afterward.

It is enough to shorten the branches to the first strong lateral shoot. This can stimulate rejuvenation of the entire branch.

In a dense crown, shoots constantly compete for nutrients and light, so plums grow small and lose some of their flavor.
