According to the Greenville Police Department, previously confirmed by PEOPLE, police officers and paramedics were called to a residence in Greenville, South Carolina, on Sunday, August 16, at about 1:50 p.m. local time following a report of an “unresponsive woman.” It was later revealed to be 36-year-old Panettiere.
As reported by TMZ, citing law enforcement sources, the critical situation was reported to the services by a friend of the “Scream” star. The identity of the caller has not yet been publicly disclosed.
According to the publication, medics tried to revive Panettiere using an “advanced life support system.” In addition to chest compressions, special drugs, breathing tubes, and heart rhythm monitoring were used.
It is reported that at 2:32 p.m., Panettiere was pronounced dead. The chest compressions performed by paramedics also failed to revive her.
In a radio communication recording obtained by PEOPLE from emergency services, around the time Panettiere died, officers were heard discussing “overdose” and “cardiac arrest.”
The investigation into her death is being conducted by the Greenville Police Department and the Greenville County Coroner’s Office.

“No signs of violent death or suspicious circumstances were found during the initial investigation,” a Greenville Police Department spokesperson said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE. “The 911 call was made by an acquaintance of the actress.”
The police informed PEOPLE that the official cause of Panettiere’s death will be announced only after an autopsy. Officers also did not confirm claims that advanced life support methods were used to revive her.
Panettiere rose to fame in 1994, starring in the ABC soap opera One Life to Live. She later played well-known roles in the series Heroes and Nashville as well as in the Scream film series.
She is survived by her 11-year-old daughter Kaya, whom she had with her former fiancé Wladimir Klitschko.
