This area, located about 3 km south of the Chinese border, is controlled by the Ta’ang National Liberation Army – an ethnic armed group fighting against the central government of Myanmar.
A rescuer who rushed to the explosion site told The Associated Press that by Sunday evening, 46 bodies had been found, cremated, and removed, including six children.

A rescuer speaking on condition of anonymity said that 74 injured people were taken to the town hospital, and rescue operations are ongoing.
Another rescuer in Namhkam, also speaking on condition of anonymity, indicated that about 40 people died, and more than 100 houses near the explosion site were damaged.
