A 29-year-old man from Kansas was rescued by helicopter after being struck by lightning on Sunday evening in an open area above the tree line.

Later, medics declared him dead. His name was not released.

Due to prolonged volcanic activity, which caused the nearby Catania airport to be closed for most of last week, local authorities closed large areas of the volcano’s slopes to travelers.
