Klaipėda University Hospital is still in trouble, administration goes on unpaid leave

On Monday, information appeared on social networks that doctors and nurses at Klaipėda University Hospital (KUL) are being urged to take several days of unpaid leave to help balance the hospital’s budget.

The hospital administration publicly denied such information about employees providing medical services.

It is emphasized that KUL operates as usual, employees are not forced to take unpaid leave, and organizational processes run smoothly.

However, it is becoming clear that the practice of unpaid leave is already being implemented in the hospital, but, as officially announced, this decision was made by the KUL management. The hospital administration is also invited to show solidarity.

“This does not affect medical staff and patients. This request does not concern clinical department employees – doctors, nurses, and other specialists directly working with patients. Therefore, the hospital’s operations and patient services are and will continue as usual,” emphasized Dr. Audrius Šimaitis.

Klaipėda University Hospital, after the merger of three seaside medical institutions, is facing a financial hole. Debts amount to millions of euros.
