The company “Sea Legend” tested this idea last year when it made the first container ship voyage from China to Europe via the so-called Northern Sea Route along the Russian coast. According to the company, the journey from the eastern Chinese city of Ningbo to the port of Felixstowe in England took 20 days, which is about half the time it takes for cargo to travel from China to Europe via the Suez Canal.
“Sea Legend” will now become the first operator to provide regular container shipping services via the Northern Sea Route over a seven-week period until October 3.
The “Sea Legend” ship “Dubai Tower” will depart from Ningbo to Felixstowe on Saturday night, a Ningbo port official told AFP on Friday.
Other shipping companies have previously transported cargo via the Northern Sea Route, with the first being the Danish company “Maersk” in 2018.

According to a shipping analysis published in June by the business insurance company “Allianz Commercial,” a record 23 containers were transported via the Northern Sea Route last year, compared to 15 the previous year.
However, many companies have committed to avoiding regular routes in this area due to the risk that it could accelerate glacier melting.
“While these routes can shorten transit times, increasing ship traffic on Arctic shipping routes poses a significant risk and could have devastating environmental consequences,” the “Ocean Conservancy” website states.
