The exhibition “Noise Gates” presents the city’s rhythm, quiet nature, and the ruins of construction and war as a medium encoded with experiences of urban change. Here, the sounds of the port and heavy industry, harsh and sometimes unsettling, reveal themselves not only as disturbances. Sometimes they can become movement and a shared rhythm, providing an impulse to unite communities, help survive losses, and seek new ways to create experiences in cities whose identity is unstable and therefore attractive.

In the city of Kotka, located in eastern Finland, the horizon is still marked by the islands of the Finnish Gulf lost after the Winter War. They are visible to the naked eye from Kotka but remain unreachable, becoming relics of geopolitical imagination and personal losses.
Meanwhile, in Klaipėda, the community of city residents changed dramatically after World War II. The city remained, but the continuity of its experience was broken as local narratives dispersed. Later, after the late 1990s, Klaipėda once again lost part of its population when active young people and alternative culture mediators left the city.
Thus, alongside the lost island landscapes of Kotka, the exhibition also reveals several references to the former avant-garde culture and rave scene of Klaipėda, as well as the overall importance of the city’s sound in imagining the city’s future, raising questions about the ecological fate of communities located by the seaside.

For the first time, KKKC collaborates with the Museum of the History of Lithuania Minor, which holds historical significance for the city, and on September 10th, part of the exhibition and a reading directed by Naubertas Jasinskas (the day before the official opening) will be presented at the MLMI Castle Tower. The exhibition “Noise Gates” is curated by Justė Kostikovaitė, and the exposition is prepared in cooperation with the Kotka city municipality.
