France generates about 70 percent of its electricity from nuclear energy. This year, the country’s nuclear energy production was disrupted due to numerous heat waves and droughts.
According to AFP calculations based on data published by the energy group EDF since 2015, production capacity decreased by 20.4 percent.
The majority of the lost nuclear energy production capacity was related to the complete or partial shutdown of five out of six reactors at the Gravelines nuclear power plant, when a swarm of jellyfish clogged the cooling water pumps of the blocks.

Experts say that climate change has created very favorable conditions for jellyfish to reproduce.
Besides the largest Gravelines nuclear power plant in Western Europe, the shutdown or reduction of production at other reactors is related to extreme heat and droughts, which cause a shortage of water needed for cooling in power plants.
