Why is there so much red brick architecture in the Klaipėda region? What can these buildings tell us about the people who lived in this area, their culture, religion, or historical turning points? Why does this part of Lithuania look different today than the rest of the country – why is the architecture, religious heritage, culture, or identity of the people different here? According to the event organizers, red brick architecture is one of the means that can help answer many of these questions.

“In the Klaipėda region, we pass by dozens of red brick churches, schools, post offices, or railway stations every day. Often they just look like old buildings, but in fact, each of them uniquely tells about the people of the region and their lives. Through architecture, we can better understand how the Klaipėda region differs from the rest of Lithuania and why its history is worth exploring today,” says Edita Valinčienė, founder of the public institution “Red Bricks.”
At the event, historian of Klaipėda University, co-author of the Klaipėda and Neringa architecture guides, Prof. Dr. Vasilijus Safronovas will invite attendees to delve into architecture as if exploring an open-air museum, because it helps understand the identity of the people who created and lived in the buildings, their cultural diversity, and historical contexts.
“Old architecture has long ceased to be just about forms, materials, or volumes. It is also a way to tell history – its most important turning moments and its less visible sides, which speak about everyday life. In the Neringa municipality, we have very distinctive multilayered architecture, and the Klaipėda region, part of which was the entire municipality territory – the only part of Lithuania whose culture and architecture developed for centuries in different political and cultural contexts. By highlighting this today, we create new values that undoubtedly enrich the understanding of what Lithuania is,” says Prof. Dr. V. Safronovas.

Event location – Nida Evangelical Lutheran Church – is a vivid example of red brick architecture in the Klaipėda region. The event will include the participation of this church’s pastor Jonas Liorančas. The conversation about our relationship with the region’s history will take place in a space that is a telling witness to historical transformations.
The event is free and open to everyone – both those living in Neringa and visitors vacationing there in the summer.
