A journalist from VarenaPlius.lt visited the villages of Puvočiai and Kašetai in the Marcinkonys eldership, where there is still almost no electricity anywhere. In some places, the roof covering has been torn off, and the roadsides and yards are full of fallen, broken trees.

Ramunė Sinkevičienė, the elder of Puvočiai eldership, said that the storm in the village yesterday evening lasted quite briefly – about ten minutes, but caused a lot of damage. “The sky mixed with the earth in the literal sense of the word, it even rained hail. After the storm, the Marcinkonys-Merkinė road was impassable. My husband Ričardas invited Vilnius University lecturers and students doing internships who were camping in the village to help and they got to work. Then other Puvočiai residents joined, firefighters arrived. Everyone worked until late in the evening until the road was cleared of fallen trees. Sincere thanks to all the helpers, especially the Vilnius University lecturers and students,” the elder said.
There are plenty of fallen trees and broken branches in the yards of Kašetai village residents. Onutė Sereičikienė regretfully said that when she arrived at the homestead, she found the neighbor’s alders fallen on her garden, which also broke the fence. Her homestead is near the Grūda River, where there are also fallen trees blocking the river. “Canoeists like the Grūda very much, but it is better not to paddle in this section now because thick fallen pines completely block the river,” Onutė said.
Tree clearing work continues until evening, but it will definitely not be possible to eliminate the consequences of the storm today.
