Lawn mowing – according to a clear order

An environmental maintenance expert emphasizes: the lawn must be mowed following certain rules. According to him, the edges should be tidied up first.

“When taking a trimmer in hand, but scissors or a hand saw can also be used, it is necessary to trim the edges of the lawn, the borders near terraces, paths, curbs. Often, rhizomatous couch grass is added to the lawn seed mix, which perfectly fills emptier gaps. However, it spreads to other places as well, for example, on the already mentioned curbs, flower beds, etc. Therefore, it is better to tidy up the edge zones first, and only then start mowing the main area,” says T. Gurskas.

However, before starting mowing work, he recommends properly preparing the lawn mower, especially its blades. Only properly sharpened lawn mower blades, according to the specialist, will allow you to enjoy a beautiful view and protect the plant from dangers.

“If the blades are dull, they do not cut but tear the lawn leaves, which can later weaken and rust. Such leaves become a good medium for fungal infections to spread, which can later transfer to surrounding plants. To avoid this, it is advisable to keep the blades as sharp as possible, and before mowing, it is even useful to disinfect the lawn mower by spraying disinfectant from below,” asserts the environmental maintenance expert.

T. Gurskas emphasizes that fungal infections are very active. They can spread through birds, wind, or even from shoes, for example, after walking on a neighbor’s lawn that is infected with fungus.

“Therefore, disinfecting the lawn mower is one of the reliable ways to fight fungal pathogens. However, if you know that the lawn on the neighboring plot is infected, mow your own as low as possible so that it dries out as quickly as possible. Fungi cannot spread in dry lawns – they need moisture. Finally, fertilize the lawn to strengthen it and promote rapid growth,” says the specialist.

Fertilizers will also be needed

T. Gurskas adds that fertilizers for the lawn are primarily needed not as a protective measure but as a growth stimulant. According to him, it is best to choose fertilizers rich in nitrogen during the summer and fertilize the lawn with them at least once a month.

“In a humid climate, plants need nitrogen, which stimulates the growth of green mass, leaf density, and root development. It increases the chlorophyll content, making the lawn intensively green, lush, and decorative. In turn, sulfur helps better absorb nitrogen and participates in the production of proteins, amino acids, and vitamins. It also performs a disinfectant function, protecting plants from fungal diseases,” explains the expert.

It is emphasized that it is very important to spread the fertilizer evenly so that the lawn can grow neatly and uniformly green. It is advised to spread the fertilizer using a centrifugal spreader, but it can also be done manually.

“Whatever fertilizing method you choose, the most important thing is to spread the fertilizer evenly. If this is not done, various stripes, so-called ‘smiles,’ and other bands may appear on the lawn later, spoiling the overall appearance. Finally, check the weather forecast for the coming days: if there is no rain, turn on the irrigation system, mow the lawn at a height of 5 cm, and if it rains, mow it at a height of 3 cm,” advises landscape specialist T. Gurskas.
