In Kėdainiai district, a demining operation has been ongoing for the third day – a large amount of ammunition and its parts were found near the crossing

As reported by the Lithuanian Armed Forces in a press release, a report about objects resembling explosives was made on August 4 via the general emergency number by employees of a company conducting excavation work near a railway crossing.

1410 artillery shell fuzes and 15 artillery shells were found.

According to senior lieutenant Alan Petrošius, deputy commander of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Company, a large quantity of explosives and their parts were found only 15 meters from the railway line, posing a threat not only to the environment but also to infrastructure.

“A large part of the explosives is buried underground, so the operation is time-consuming. Each one needs to be safely excavated and removed. To speed up the process and save human resources, we additionally called in men from the General Engineering Company with engineering equipment.

The operation has been ongoing for the third day, and so far 1410 artillery shell fuzes and 15 artillery shells have been found,” he says, assuring that the men from both companies are working shoulder to shoulder and striving to remove the danger as quickly as possible.

Finding such a large quantity of ammunition at one time is very rare, but individual explosives are still abundant in Lithuania.

If an explosive or an object resembling one is found, specialists urge caution, advising not to touch it under any circumstances, not to carry it anywhere, or move it in any way, but to immediately call the general emergency number 112 and report the find.
