The Ukrainian ambassador spoke during a discussion among top diplomats about Euro-Atlantic integration. Although he was asked to comment on Ukraine’s participation in the JEF (Joint Expeditionary Force) coalition, he began talking about NATO.
“I know NATO very well. For 12 years I personally worked to ensure that we assimilate NATO standards, and every year I heard stories that we would soon join NATO. Unfortunately, we will never join!” emphasized General V. Zalužnas.
He believes that the obstacle to Ukraine’s accession to the Alliance is that “it is impossible to join an organization that adheres to World War II doctrines, given the current level of development of the Ukrainian armed forces…”
Despite this assessment, V. Zalužnas acknowledged that “Ukraine needs technologies that are still available today in NATO countries,” including missile defense, space capabilities, and so on.

Speaking about Ukraine’s security guarantees, he believes that effective ones are other unions, not NATO.
“Ukraine will be linked with blocs and alliances that are likely to be formed. Most likely, we will be talking about a European military security bloc,” said V. Zalužnas.
