On August 1, an explosion thundered in the “Balzi Rossi” restaurant in Kudrinskaya Square in the center of Moscow, located next to an apartment building where a fire broke out.
The target was A. Chaiko, stated the Russian so-called “war correspondent” Kirill Fedorov and the “Telegram” channel “Zapiski veterana”. The pro-Russian blogger Anatoly Shariy posted a video showing preparations for a celebration in the restaurant. On the wall behind the stage was written “Aleksandr 55” – the age A. Chaiko turned on July 27.
The “Telegram” channel “VChK-OGPU”, associated with Russian security forces, claimed that among the event guests was a person who studied with A. Chaiko at the Russian Armed Forces General Military Academy.
“One of the interlocutors said that A. Chaiko had not yet celebrated his appointment as chief commander – which took place in May – and planned to do so together with his anniversary: he turned 55 on July 27. According to our data, among the event guests was a group of high-ranking Russian FSB officers, officials, deputies, Defense Ministry generals, and others,” the report said.
The Russian National Anti-Terrorism Committee stated that the homemade explosive device could have been brought into the restaurant by a woman who later died in the explosion.
The newspaper “Kommersant”, citing sources, writes that the private party was guarded by strict security. The explosive device filled with metal balls was detonated remotely. According to the preliminary version, the woman most likely did not know what she was carrying.

The explosion killed the woman with the explosive, a security guard who did not let her in, and another restaurant visitor. In addition, at least 21 people were injured.
It is not exactly known whether A. Chaiko was injured. The “Telegram” channel “Novaja ploščad”, which publishes behind-the-scenes Russian information, writes that A. Chaiko is alive: allegedly, he read a message sent to him in the “Telegram” app.
Accused of Bucha crimes
A. Chaiko led Russian forces in the Bucha direction in February–March 2022.
The Ukrainian authorities and international organizations accuse the units under his command of participating in mass killings and war crimes against civilians in Bucha.
In March 2026, the Council of the European Union included Colonel General A. Chaiko in the official sanctions list for actions threatening Ukraine’s sovereignty, as well as for connections to the tragic events in Bucha.
