During the city council meeting held on Thursday, the head of the “Nemuno aušros” faction, Vidas Karolis, announced that council member Sergejus Mažūga had been removed from the faction. This information was confirmed by the politician himself during the meeting.

At the council meeting, S. Mažūga stated that his and the faction’s paths diverged due to differing positions on one issue. Initially, the politician publicly said he did not intend to comment on the reasons for the disagreements, but later revealed them on his social media account.
According to him, the conflict was sparked by the story about the unwanted Russian-singing group “LoudFish” at the Sea Festival.
S. Mažūga announced that as of July 27, he no longer belongs to the “Nemuno aušra” faction of the Klaipėda city municipality council. According to him, this decision was due to fundamental disagreements.
The politician explains that the conflict arose after he contacted Klaipėda Mayor Arvydas Vaitkus and the director of the municipality administration, asking to clarify the situation regarding the group “LoudFish”.
The group’s leader issued a public statement about the miscommunication with the festival organizers. Allegedly, the musicians were informed by phone that they would not be able to perform at the Sea Festival as street performers, but they did not receive an official written response explaining the reasons for this decision.
According to S. Mažūga, during the phone conversation, the refusal was directly linked to the fact that the group’s repertoire includes songs performed in Russian.
“The decision was due to fundamental disagreements,” the council member stated in his post.
Despite being removed from the faction, S. Mažūga emphasized that he remains a member of the ruling majority.
“I will continue my work in the Council as a member not belonging to any faction or group. At the same time, I remain a member of the ruling majority and will continue to contribute to the implementation of the 2023–2027 coalition activity program,” the politician writes on social media.
From seven members, only three remain
S. Mažūga’s departure is already the fourth blow to the “Nemuno aušros” faction during this council term.
The faction’s disintegration began in April when Kęstutis Bartininkas left. In May, Aleksejus Diukinas announced his withdrawal, and in June, Monika Žvinklytė also left the faction. All three politicians, like S. Mažūga now, chose to continue working as council members not belonging to any faction or group but remained within the ruling majority.
After the 2023 local elections, the “Nemuno aušros” faction in the Klaipėda city council consisted of seven members. After four departures, only three politicians remain – faction head Vidas Karolis, Henrikas Galinauskas, and Ramūnas Mika.
Despite the significantly reduced composition, the faction still belongs to the ruling majority.
