According to the Ministry of Agriculture, hundreds of firefighters are fighting the largest fire in the province of Muğla, assisted by more than 20 planes and helicopters dropping water on the flames.
Media reports state that the main highway leading from the tourist city of Antalya to the coastal resort of Fethiye was closed due to smoke.
TV channel NTV reported that access to the ancient ruins of Olympos in Antalya province was closed.
The office of the governor of Muğla province reported that the forest fire started on an agricultural land plot and spread to the forest. The office added that 202 residents and some hospital patients were evacuated.
Another large fire is raging in the Balıkesir region on the Aegean coast along the road connecting the country’s third-largest city İzmir with the Dardanelles region.
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced on Wednesday evening that about 90 fires broke out in the country on Wednesday, of which 81 have already been brought under control.
According to him, more than 3,000 firefighters are working to stop the remaining fires.
Turkey has sent two firefighting planes to Spain to help extinguish forest fires raging there, and two more to France, which is also fighting forest fires.
