Soon after the authorities announced this measure, a queue of more than 20 vehicles quickly formed at the Civil Guard checkpoint near Chapinería and Navas del Rey – two villages that were completely evacuated a few days ago – reported an AFP correspondent on site.
Last week, the Spanish government declared a national state of emergency due to wildfires that forced about 60,000 people to leave their homes and devastated an area of 77,000 hectares – a territory almost equivalent to the size of New York City.
The decision to lift the evacuation orders was made as authorities reported positive progress in the fight against the fires, which in some parts of central and eastern Spain are still not under control.

“We are at the stage of containing the fires,” Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska told journalists.
“Our task is to continue containing the fires and achieve a stable situation,” he noted, warning of “difficult” weather conditions as temperatures are expected to rise from Tuesday.
