He emphasized that the state does not have a single euro surplus.

„The fact that the ‘Sodra’ budget has a surplus does not mean that the entire government sector has unused money. On the contrary – the Lithuanian government sector will borrow a record amount for current needs this year, almost 7 billion euros and almost 4 billion more to repay previous debts,“ commented N. Mačiulis.

According to him, in 2022, 232 million euros were needed to service the state debt (interest payments). This year – already 1.1 billion: that is more than the entire culture funding and almost twice as much as was needed for interest payments after the 2009 crisis.

„According to the State Audit Office’s assessment, in a couple of years, almost 2 billion euros will be needed just for interest payments. The job of every responsible government right now should not be to propose where else to spend money, but to figure out where to cut the sprawling government sector expenses, how to optimize the network of state institutions, where to save and increase efficiency and transparency by using artificial intelligence solutions. Spending money is very easy, my 12-year-old daughter can teach that. Earning and using it responsibly – much harder,“ wrote N. Mačiulis.
