In the Lithuanian Basketball League (LKL), according to the regulations, six foreigners can be registered for one game. This is the first time in history that Žalgiris will face such a dilemma.
“The sixth player – not a citizen of the Republic of Lithuania and not an EU citizen or not a citizen of the Republic of Lithuania but holding dual citizenship, i.e., citizenship of the EU and any non-EU country, can be registered for a game only when the club pays a fee of 14,500 euros to the Lithuanian Basketball Association (ALK),” – it is stated in point 6.8.5 a of the LKL regulations.
So, according to the wording of the regulations, “Žalgiris,” if it registers six legionnaires who are not EU citizens for at least one game, will have to pay a one-time fee of 14,500 euros to the Lithuanian Basketball Association (ALK).

However, the roster includes the German M. Lo. The LKL regulations state:
“If among the six players registered (or to be registered) in the team – who are not citizens of the Republic of Lithuania – there is at least one European Union citizen, then the fee specified in point 6.8.5 a does not apply,” – it is stated in point 6.8.5 d.
This means that if Kaunas registers M. Lo in every game, they can have five more legionnaires in the twelve-man squad and maintain the possibility of not paying the 14,500 euro fee to ALK.
However, this headache could be avoided by registering five legionnaires for the games.
