This race will take place for the 35th time.
The traditional relay race “Medininkai–Vilnius” is a 35-kilometer running route completed by a team of seven runners.
This route symbolically connects the place where the officers were killed and the cemetery where they are buried.
July 31st will mark 35 years since the early midsummer morning of 1991, when attackers from the Riga Soviet Special Purpose Militia Detachment (OMON) attacked Lithuanian border employees at the Medininkai post on the Lithuanian-Belarusian border.

During the OMON attack, seven customs, police, and border officers were shot dead, and one was seriously injured. Mindaugas Balavakas, Algimantas Juozakas, Juozas Janonis, Algirdas Kazlauskas, Antanas Musteikis, Stanislovas Orlavičius, and Ričardas Rabavičius were killed.
Only the life of the seriously injured customs officer Tomas Šernas was saved.
