The Lithuanian Football Federation announced this on Saturday.
President Gitanas Nausėda expressed condolences on the death of A. Klimkevičius.
“May the bright memory and works of Algirdas Klimkevičius remain an inspiration to everyone who cares about the future of Lithuanian sports,” reads the country’s leader’s condolence message distributed by the Presidential Palace.

According to G. Nausėda, A. Klimkevičius’s legacy is not limited to the football field – he became an important chronicler of Lithuanian football history: for decades he collected, researched and systematized material, wrote significant books about the history of Lithuanian football, immortalized the development of this sport and the fates of people, preserved the country’s football memory for future generations.
He published more than a hundred articles on the history of Lithuanian football and sports, and wrote the books “Lithuanian Olympic Baptism”, “History of Independent Lithuania’s (1918–1940) Football”, “Lithuanian Football 50 Years in Captivity (1940–1990)”.

A. Klimkevičius coached the master teams of Kaunas “Banga”, Klaipėda “Granitas” and Vilnius “Žalgiris”, contributed to significant Lithuanian football achievements, trained coaches and strengthened the Lithuanian sports system.
In 2023, he was awarded the Medal of the Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas.
