The current interim leader of the Democrats, MEP Virginijus Sinkevičius, is considered the favourite in the elections; his candidacy was put forward by 40 out of 46 chapters that did so.
He will be challenged by the Minister of Health, Member of Parliament Linas Kukuraitis.
The chapters also nominated the Minister of Energy, MP Lukas Savickas, and MP, former Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius, but they refused to participate in the elections.
During the convention, the party’s deputy chairmen, council, and other governing bodies will be elected, and political priorities for the coming years will be defined.
The convention will also approve a resolution on the political identity, value principles, and direction of the Democratic Union ‘For Lithuania’, which aims to clearly define the party’s long-term political stance, as previously announced in its press release.

BNS reported that Saulius Skvernelis, who had previously served as the leader of the Democrats, resigned from his position in the spring. The politician did so after it became clear that the prosecutor’s office would seek to lift his legal immunity in investigating a case of corruption in the State Plant Service.
The Democratic Union ‘For Lithuania’ recently joined the ruling coalition, which also consists of social democrats and ‘peasants’.
