“Winning at the Sundance Film Festival, founded by Oscar-winning actor Robert Redford, not only opens the doors to international festivals but also to US cinemas. Only a few Lithuanian films have achieved this, one of them being Marija Kavtaradze’s “You Don’t Remind Me of Anything,” which was also recognized at Sundance. “Divorce During Wartime” is relevant to a wide audience, and audience-friendly – this is confirmed by the choice of international film distributors. Divorce When You Least Expect It
The emotional love drama tells the story of Marija, an ambitious head of a large advertising agency department, and Vytas, a film director searching for himself, who decide to divorce. It would seem that their marriage lacks nothing. The couple lives in a home with impeccable interior design and raises a daughter. A family like any other. But Marija feels unhappy. When the woman finally dares to admit she wants a divorce, she chooses the worst possible time for an open conversation. Does divorce always mean failure? Or perhaps, on the contrary, everything is for the best?
The film stars some of the country’s most prominent actors today: Marius Repšys (“The Saint,” “Chinese Sea,” “The Train Robbery Committed by Saulius and Paulius”), Žygimantė Elena Jakštaitė (“Runner,” “Renovation”), and the young actress Amelija Adomaitytė, who has won audience sympathy, as well as Indrė Patkauskaitė (“Survive Summer,” “The Poet,” “Pilgrims”), Larisa Kalpokaitė (“Happy Stars,” “Vacationers,” “Uninvited Love”), Rimantas Bagdzevičius (“Uninvited Love”).
Travels and Collects Awards
After its premiere at Sundance, “Divorce During Wartime” has garnered significant attention from international film festivals – the film has already visited nearly two dozen festivals, including Gothenburg, Istanbul, Hong Kong, Karlovy Vary, Washington, Las Palmas, etc. In early August, the premiere will take place at the Melbourne Film Festival in Australia.
The shelves of awards are filling up. In addition to the Sundance award, A. Blaževičius was named best director in Hong Kong, won a special jury prize in Uruguay, and at the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Film Festival, he won the Silver Lady Harimaguada – the second most important festival award.

Witty, Subtly Provocative
The film’s global journey is constantly accompanied by reviews from prestigious film publications and renowned critics. “A witty, subtly provocative comedy by screenwriter and director A. Blaževičius – both empathetic and surgical, revealing partners’ attempts to turn internal anxiety into social activism,” writes “Variety.”
Entertainment portal “Rolling Stone” notes that what begins as a realistic domestic drama about a failed marriage gradually turns into a biting satire about the testing of values.
“The confusion you feel trying to reconcile daily life with the fear of the future is universal worldwide,” reads the review of the film “Divorce During Wartime” on the platform of renowned US film critic Roger Ebert.
“Divorce During Wartime” is A. Blaževičius’s third film. The director’s previous two works, “The Saint” and “Runner,” together won eight “Silver Cranes.”
