Thirty years ago, the legendary pilot Jurgis Kairys flew under this only suspension bridge in Kaunas for the first time.

“The bridge maintenance was carried out continuously. However, we have reached a limit where simple repairs are not enough. We will start the work next week. Until then, work zone fencing will be installed,” says Aloyzas Pakalniškis, head of the City Maintenance Department of Kaunas Municipality.

During the work, the bridge structures, stairs, and lighting will be repaired. The concrete tile surface is planned to be replaced with granite, thus maintaining continuity with the pavement of S. Daukantas Street.

While the pedestrian passage is closed, residents of Kaunas and city guests will be able to access the island via other bridges from King Mindaugas Avenue – near the Carmelite Church, and via A. Mickevičius, Maironis, and I. Kant streets.

The work is scheduled until next autumn. The company “Autokausta,” which won the public procurement contract, will carry out the work.
